Some of the known Rummy variants are Points Rummy, Deals Rummy, Pool Rummy, Indian Rummy, Gin Rummy, Rummy 500, California Rummy, etc. However, the gameplay of grouping the cards remains the same. Each of the Rummy variants is based on skills and has its own share of fun and thrill.
Though the objective of all these Rummy variants is the same, the rules to play the game vary. In this article, we take a look at the most common and top three variants of the game which are played worldwide.
4 Popular Rummy Variants
1. Gin Rummy
Since the evolution of Rummy centuries ago, Gin Rummy has been one of the most prominent Rummy variants played worldwide. Almost all of the Rummy variants have evolved from Gin Rummy. The game of Gin Rummy is played between 2 players with a single deck of cards, and after the dealing, the first 21 cards are placed face-up to make the ‘discard pile’ while the rest of the cards are placed face-down to form the ‘stock.’ The objective of this game is to make sets and sequences.
2. Shanghai Rummy
This Rummy variant has evolved from the Contract Rummy variant and is said to have originated in China. The objective of the variant is similar to that of Contract Rummy. There are two decks of cards used to play the game, and every player is dealt 11 cards. The concept of ‘buying’ in Shanghai Rummy is the process of discarding a card while it is not the player’s turn to play and take a card from the pile. It is important to note that a player can only buy two cards in a round of the game.
3. Dummy Rummy
The game of Dummy Rummy is quite similar to the 13 Card Rummy variant. The objective of this game is to get rid of all the cards by forming sets and sequences. All the printed Jokers and cards with rank two are considered as Jokers, and can be substituted for the missing cards. The points associated with the cards are also different.
4. Kalooki Rummy
Kalooki Rummy is also called the Jamaican Rummy. However, it is said to have originated from Israel. The game has two variants – one is played in Europe and the other in America. The rules of the gameplay are quite different from that of the standard Rummy. However, the objective to get rid of cards by melding them stays the same. Different versions of the game include the usage of the Jokers. The European version of the game uses only 2 Jokers and the total number of cards is 106. The North American version of the game uses 108 cards altogether. The winning strategy is to use up the jokers for higher points. However, you should also keep in mind that you need to get rid of the cards and that should be your primary focus.
There are many Rummy card game variants as players across various parts of the globe kept bringing about changes and their customized variations. However, the rules of these variations are almost similar. Rummy is the most beloved card game, and players leave no opportunity to indulge in it!
